Evansville, Indiana Community Information
Evansville was founded in early 1800, when over 200 hundred acres was purchased from the government. With the city being located on the Ohio River, it quickly became an economic and social center for the Tri-State area. Evansville is still going strong today. It is the 3rd largest city in the state, and Evansville has become the commercial, medical and service center for the region.
Big city convenience (without the traffic) with a small town feel makes Evansville a great place to live, work and play. Evansville offers a wide variety of entertainment, shopping and sports for all to enjoy.
Museums
The city of Evansville has a rich history, one that reaches back over two hundred years, and much of that history can still be seen and experienced today with our many museums.
At Angels Mounds you can learn how the native people of Southern Indiana lived. Angel Mounds was a Chiefdom; this is where the chief lived, so it was the regional center of the community with several thousand villagers. Today it is one of the best preserved prehistoric Native American Sites in the United States.
The Reitz Museum is a home from the Victorian Era, a beautiful example of Second French Empire Architecture. You won´t want to miss a visit to the Reitz Museum at Christmas; it is an exceptionally charming time to see the beauty and wonder of the home.
The Evansville Museum of Art, History and Science is located downtown along the Ohio River. The museum also houses the Koch Planetarium, the oldest planetarium in Indiana, and is home to the Evansville Museum Transportation Center, making Evansville, southern Indiana´s most significant cultural center.
The Koch Family Children´s Museum is for the young and young of heart of our community. This is a hands on learning center with interactive exhibits.
Performing ArtsIf you love the performing arts, then you will find a wide variety of events to suit every palate.
The Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra plays various concert series including, classic, double pops and several special events. These wonderful concerts are performed in the vintage Victory Theater. The theater also is home for many local ballet and modern dance companies, theater and touring productions.
One of the longest running community theaters can be found right here in Evansville. The Evansville Civic Theater dates back to the 1920s and is located in the historic Columbia Movie Theater. The theater produces several productions each season, ranging from comedies to drama to musicals. Productions are always well done and very enjoyable to attend.
The Center is home to many productions, Broadway shows and concerts. This 2,500 seat venue is a wonderful addition to two other venues in Evansville. The 8,500-seat Mesker Amphitheater at Mesker Park can accommodate outdoor concerts and special events and the 12,500-seat Roberts Stadium is where larger concerts and sporting events are enjoyed.
Sports
Evansville is home to a variety of sports. If you enjoy baseball, starting in the spring you can catch the Evansville Otters playing at the Historic Bosse Field, the 3rd old baseball field in the United States. If you saw the movie A League of Their Own, then you may recognize the field. It was used as location for filming the movie.
If you enjoy college sports, then the University of Evansville and University of Southern Indiana, draw thousands of spectators to their basketball and baseball games each season. The community shows great support to the college teams.
Evansville also has a professional hockey team the Evansville IceMen and two semi-pro football teams- the Ohio Bearcats of the Midwest Football League and the Tri-State Titans of the Mid Valley Ohio Football League. Evansville offers a wide range of sports facilities for soccer and skating, and for our little leaguers there are a variety of programs available for all skill levels and ages.
Shopping and Dining
There are no shortages when it comes to shopping and dining in Evansville.
Eastland Mall located on the east side of town is home to more than 130 shops and restaurants and 4 major department stores. If you are hungry after a busy day of shopping, you won´t have to go far. You will be able to find any type of food you desire for any budget with the great variety of restaurants offered in Evansville.
Looking for antique stores and quaint shops, downtown is the place to go. While you are there check out Casino Aztar and the entertainment district. |
